I woke up to Christmas morning at my door-and look how pretty it made my fridge look!

I'll be giving you a day by day review of how things are going with the cleanse-how I'm feeling....If I want to eat my limbs off, or not... If I have high or low energy throughout the day....you get it. I know Lauryn, Annie, Samantha, and Cody will be updating lots, too, so check in at

I like to watch health food documentaries to pump me up in the days prior to doing something like a cleanse or detox [it helps in the I need to chew food with my mouth right NOW! feelings that start around day 1]. So, in my pre-Suja Juice cleanse 'educate-a-thon' I stumbled across a movie called Hungry for Change.
Here's the trailer...
I had never heard of this documentary before, I just saw it randomly on Netflix,
and GUYS! YOU NEED TO WATCH IT!
It kicked my butt into gear more so than any other form of food information I've come across yet. It reassured me that detoxing and cleansing with Suja, then introducing healthy real foods back into my everyday life has to happen for me, and most importantly, my family.
I'm a healthy person, people
I make healthy choices everyday...I thought I was doing OK with what I was choosing to feed my family.
Then I went to my pantry and had a hard dose of reality.
The nutritionist and experts in Hungry for Change said the average child in America eats somewhere around 22 teaspoons of sugar a day. There is no way I'm feeding my kids anywhere near 22 teaspoons of sugar...So I go to the cupboard, start with the kids regular breakfast foods- and by just breakfast alone (with food and drinks) they are up to 10 teaspoons....
I don't buy chips, I don't buy cookies, I don't buy sugary cereals, I don't buy soda-HOW!?!?!?
It's mostly from crackers, bread products, and this Carnation breakfast essentials drink that I have always bought for my kids. It claims its full of vitamins and mineral--but when a products is 1/2 sugar doesn't it cancel out all the good stuff in it? In my book, yes.
So, slowly but surely, there are going to be some changes in our household over the next little while.
--and the kids already hate me for it.

I gave Zuri her 'cocoa baba' breakfast drink that I've been giving her since she was 2 this morning with only 1/2 the cocoa packet in it-she was not liking it at all! The situation was simliar to what I think would happen when you take away a crack addicts crack pipe...Seriously! The fit she threw was unlike anything I've seen her do in her life thus far.
Over a flipping sippy cup drink?
Ummm, scary much?
I'd say so.
I didn't know I was raising a sugar feign until I tried to take her sugar away.

Whew---Hopefully this gets easier.
But there's my health rant for the month. Promise. If I could be this blind-You might be too...go check out your pantry.
... and here [vvv] is the one measly smile I got out of ZuZu after her cocoa baba tantrum.
I worked hard for that smile-you betcha I'm documenting it.

i can't wait to hear how you like the cleanse, i have been wanting to do one! i know i consume entirely too much sugar!!
ReplyDeleteWes! I also just watched that documentary along with TED chew on that. It seriously makes me sick to think about how much sugar I have been feeding the boys, and I thought I was doing pretty good! It's defiantly changed my out look on our eating style. I'm excited to hear about how the cleanse goes!!
ReplyDeletei am jealous you get to do this! can't wait to see how it goes..and your little ones are too cute for words! welcome to the bay! xo
ReplyDeleteI've watched this documentary twice in the past week and I've been telling everyone under the sun about it. While a lot of it I already knew - the motivation I acquire once it's over is addicting !
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you watched it!
Good luck with your cleanse!
Wow! I just watched the documentary. I have a juicer that I've used..twice? haha Really an eye opener!
ReplyDeleteI would love to know what your kids will be eating! I know what I should be eating (doesn't mean I always follow...oops), but I feel like its a little bit trickier with toddlers. My 18 month old probably eats healthier than me (such a hypocrite!) but I'm always interested in what other moms are doing. If you ever get time I would love to know!
